Sol & the UV Shield Quest

A side-scrolling adventure that teaches children how to enjoy the sun without harming their skin.

Most skin cancers are caused by ultraviolet radiation, and the habits that prevent them are learned young. In this game Sol runs, jumps and collects sun stars across five regions, from a grassy meadow to a snowy mountain. Along the way Sol picks up a broad-brimmed hat and SPF 30+ sunscreen, loses the sunscreen after a swim, and reaches checkpoints where a quiz question must be answered before the path opens again.

The questions cover what the UV Index means, when protection matters (UV 3 and above), why shade, clothing and sunscreen work best together, how sand, water and snow reflect UV, and why tanning beds should be avoided. Wrong answers are never punished: Sol is nudged back with a hint and a laugh. The game runs in your browser, works on a phone, and collects no data. It is in English.

How to play

  1. Press Play. On a keyboard, move with A D or and jump with Space. On a phone, use the on-screen buttons. A game controller works too.
  2. Collect sun coins and the nine hidden sun stars. Some platforms move, some fall, so keep moving.
  3. Watch the UV Index in the top bar. It changes from region to region, and drops when Sol stands in shade.
  4. At each checkpoint, read the question and jump up beneath one of the three answer blocks. The right answer opens the gate; a wrong one gives a hint and another try.
  5. Press R to restart. The cog opens the settings: voice narration, high contrast, a dyslexia-friendly font, larger text, game speed and touch-control size.
